Product information "Magnesium stearate, technical grade, CAS No.: 557-04-0, Mg: 4-5%, magnesium distearate, very fine"
Magnesium stearate (the magnesium salt of stearic acid, CAS No. 557-04-0) is a widely used industrial metallic soap with pronounced technological properties. Owing to its lubricating and release-promoting action, it is used in numerous powder-processing operations, tableting and moulding applications, as well as an auxiliary agent in the plastics, rubber and ceramics industries. The material offered is supplied in technical grade.
Our material is of purely vegetable origin. The exceptionally low iodine value (< 0.50 g I2/100 g) indicates a high degree of hydrogenation of the underlying fatty acids ("fully hardened"). As unsaturated fatty acids are present only in very small amounts, susceptibility to oxidative ageing and rancidity is reduced, which is associated with a significantly extended shelf life.
In powder compaction processes, magnesium stearate markedly reduces interparticle friction as well as friction between the powder and the die wall. This results in more reliable compact formation with fewer defects and voids and facilitates ejection of the compact from the die. It can be used either as an additive in the powder blend or as die-wall lubrication. The optimum dosage must be determined for each application, as excessive amounts may impair the bonding strength of the compact.

Frequently Asked Questions about Magnesium Stearate
What is magnesium stearate?
Magnesium stearate is the magnesium salt of stearic acid (CAS No. 557-04-0) and belongs to the group of metallic soaps. Technical grades usually contain, in addition to stearate, proportions of magnesium palmitate, since the underlying fatty acids are obtained from natural fats.
What does "technical grade" mean?
Technical grade denotes a quality intended for industrial and technical applications. The material is not declared for use in pharmaceuticals, food, animal feed or cosmetics and does not necessarily meet the requirements of the relevant pharmacopoeias or food-law regulations.
What is magnesium stearate used for?
Magnesium stearate serves primarily as a lubricant and release agent. Typical fields of application include powder compaction processes, for example in powder metallurgy, ceramics and the tableting of technical products, as well as plastics and rubber processing. It is also used as a flow agent and anti-caking agent for powders.
How does magnesium stearate work in powder compaction?
It forms thin films on the particle surfaces, thereby reducing interparticle friction as well as friction at the die wall. This promotes more uniform densification, reduces defects and makes it easier to eject the compact.
What dosage of magnesium stearate is used?
As an additive in the powder blend, proportions in the range of approximately 0.25 to 2 wt % are commonly used. The optimum amount must be determined for each application, as overdosing can reduce the bonding strength of the compact. Alternatively, the material can be applied as die-wall lubrication, which keeps the content in the compacted material itself low.
What does the low iodine value indicate?
The iodine value is a measure of the content of unsaturated fatty acids. A value below 0.5 g I2/100 g indicates largely saturated, fully hardened fatty acids. These are less susceptible to oxidation, which has a favourable effect on storage stability.
Is magnesium stearate soluble in water?
No. Magnesium stearate is practically insoluble in water and ethanol. It is hydrophobic and exhibits poor wettability by water.
How should magnesium stearate be stored?
Storage should be dry, cool and in tightly closed containers, protected from moisture and sources of heat. As with all fine organic powders, dust generation should be avoided. Information on safe handling is provided in the safety data sheet.
