This converts the otherwise insoluble starch into awater soluble product, which mainly asbinderapplies. A commonly known use is thisWet adhesive coating (also called gumming) of postage stamps and kraft paper tapes. However, it is also used as a food additive or as a binding agent in pharmaceuticals.
