Product information "99.5 % Zinc powder ultrafine, 6μm, platelet-shaped/flaky, Zinc flakes, 7440-66-6"
This flaky zinc powder is produced from gas-atomized zinc dust. The predominantly spherical zinc dust is milled in protective gas-filled ball mills to achieve the desired particle shape (flaky/flaky/scaly/cornflake). This is a dark and extremely fine zinc powder with correspondingly increased reactivity
.
H410: Very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.
P222: Avoid contact with air.
P273: Avoid release to the environment.
P280: Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection.
P370+P378: In case of fire: Use sand or special powder to extinguish.
Zinc powders are extremely important for modern and sustainable corrosion protection. Both spherical and flaky types are available. However, it turns out that the former types are superior to the latter in several respects: The effect of zinc powder corrosion protection consists of the fact that powder bound in a carrier medium (paint, filler, resins, etc.) creates a barrier effect as well as cathodic protection. Spherical particles, however, initially exhibit predominantly cathodic protection and only a small amount of barrier protection. Platelet-shaped powders, due to their overlapping primary particles, create significantly longer percolation paths and thus immediate barrier protection. Both types, however, possess the same self-healing ability. This is the less magical, but rather purely chemically/physically explainable fact that water penetrating damaged zinc particles causes corrosion. Depending on the environment, this mainly produces zinc oxide, which has a low density and therefore a larger volume. Thus, the damage, unless excessively large, closes itself. However, it can be advantageous to use spherical and platelet-shaped particles together. You can find both in our product range.
Should your application involve high mechanical stress, we highly recommend our platelet-shaped stainless steel powder 316L. This, in combination with this zinc powder, represents the ideal choice.
